Series Disc -- Dimension X and X Minus One Disc 1
[SERIES-0002]
$5.00

Dimension X was first heard on April 8, 1950, and ran sustained until September 29, 1951 on NBC, with Norman Rose handling the announcing and narriation duties. This is one of the best-known openings in radio, with the distinctive, "ad-ven-tures in time and space, told in future...TENSE!" The stories dramatized, usually by Ernest Kinoy, were from some of the finest writers of the day, even though many had not yet hit their peak: Kurt Vonnegut, Ray Bradbury, Robert Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Robert Bloch, Murray Leinster, Donald A. Wollheim, Clifford D. Simak, Jack Williamson...wow, just nothing the names gives me a new appreciation of the level of talented storytelling that went into this series.

X Minus One continued the tradition years later, starting on April 24, 1955 and running to January 9, 1958 was a half-hour science fiction radio series broadcast from in various timeslots on NBC. This revival reused many Dinemsion X scripts while also dramatising new stories, first from Astounding Science Fiction and later from Galaxy (I subscribed to Galaxy in my misspent youth); additional authors included Philip K. Dick, Frederik Pohl, Theodore Sturgeon, and others. This opening, with Fred Collins taking over from Norman Rose, is also well-loved by hobbiests:

Countdown for blastoff...X minus five...four...three...two...X minus one--Fire! From the far horizons of the unknown come transcribed tales of new dimensions in time and space. These are stories of the future; adventures in which you'll live in a million could-be years on a thousand may-be worlds. The National Broadcasting Company in cooperation with Galaxy Science Fiction Magazine presents...XXXXXxxxxxx...Minusususus...Onenenene...
